Pinpoint Builds Biomaster Antimicrobial Product Protection into Staff Safety Technology
Built-in antimicrobial product protection supports Pinpoint’s approach to designing dependable technology for demanding, high-use environments.
The Product
Pinpoint develops and manufactures staff safety systems used across healthcare, education, care, public-sector and commercial environments.
From personal wearable alarm devices and call buttons to nurse call systems and integrated security technology, Pinpoint’s solutions are designed around a fundamental requirement, providing reliable Staff safety and nurse call systems for people working in demanding environments.
But for Pinpoint, product development goes beyond core functionality. It also means considering how products are used in the real world, how frequently they are handled and the wider demands placed upon them throughout their working life.
This approach led Pinpoint to incorporate Biomaster antimicrobial technology into the polymer used for its range of its products.
The Challenge
Staff safety technology has to perform reliably in environments where equipment can be in regular use throughout the working day.
Some Pinpoint products are worn or carried throughout a shift. Others, including call buttons and nurse call devices, may be used by multiple people. In sectors such as healthcare, care and education, hygiene can also be an important consideration alongside reliability, usability and durability.
Pinpoint therefore wanted to look beyond the primary function of its technology and consider how selected products could be further developed for the environments in which they are used.
The objective was not to change the fundamental purpose of the products, but to introduce an additional product-protection feature appropriate for frequently handled equipment.
The Solution
Pinpoint selected Biomaster antimicrobial technology from Addmaster for incorporation into selected components and products.
Biomaster is integrated into the material during manufacture, becoming an integral part of the finished product rather than being applied as a temporary surface treatment.
The technology works at the treated product surface to inhibit microbial growth, providing built-in antimicrobial product protection throughout the intended lifetime of the treated material.
This made Biomaster particularly suited to Pinpoint’s requirements. The technology could be incorporated without changing the fundamental role of its staff safety systems, while providing an additional feature designed specifically for the realities of frequent, everyday use.
Products incorporating Biomaster technology include:
- P2 Personal Infrared Transmitter (PIT)
- P2 Badge PIT
- P2 Call Buttons
- P2 Reset Unit
- Wrist PIT
On the P2 Personal Infrared Transmitter, for example, Biomaster is incorporated into the rubberised grip of a device designed to be worn throughout a working shift.
The result is antimicrobial product protection that is built into the product itself rather than relying on a coating that can simply wear away through everyday handling or routine cleaning.
The Result
The integration of Biomaster gives Pinpoint an additional product-protection feature across selected products while maintaining the safety and usability functions for which they were designed.
More importantly, the project reflects Pinpoint’s wider approach to product development.
Rather than treating innovation as simply adding new functionality, the company considers the people using its products, the environments in which they operate and the practical demands products experience throughout everyday use.
Biomaster provides one way of addressing those wider considerations.
For frequently handled products, the technology provides continuous protection of the treated material by inhibiting microbial growth on its surface, complementing established cleaning and hygiene practices rather than replacing them.
By integrating that functionality into the material from the point of manufacture, Pinpoint can provide an additional product benefit without compromising the primary purpose of its technology.
It is a practical example of how thoughtful material innovation can help manufacturers develop products around the realities of the environments in which they will ultimately be used.
“Pinpoint is a great example of a manufacturer thinking beyond basic product functionality. By incorporating Biomaster into selected components during manufacture, antimicrobial product protection becomes an integral part of the material, helping to inhibit microbial growth on the treated surface throughout the intended lifetime of the product.” Paul Willocks, Global Marketing Director, Addmaster.
“Our products are designed for demanding environments where reliability and usability are essential, but we also look closely at how those products are used day to day. Incorporating Biomaster into selected products is one example of how we can consider those wider requirements and add an additional layer of product protection without changing the core purpose of the technology.” Allan Aikman, COO, Pinpoint.
