Bringing Built-In Antimicrobial Product Protection to Cable Management
Cable management is an essential part of a building’s interior. Through its collaboration with Addmaster, Centaur incorporates Biomaster antimicrobial technology into its antimicrobial PVCu trunking, combining practical cable management with built-in protection against microbial growth on the treated surface.
The Product
Centaur has manufactured in Britain for more than 50 years, supplying PVCu cable management systems for healthcare, education, government and commercial buildings. Based in Redditch, the company offers products ranging from conduits and boxes to multi-compartment trunking, power poles and posts, alongside bespoke fabrication services for individual project requirements.
Its antimicrobial Meridian range includes three-compartment dado trunking manufactured from high-impact-resistant PVCu. Designed to accommodate and segregate power and data cables, the system combines a clean appearance with the practical requirements of an electrical installation.
The Challenge
In environments such as hospitals, care homes and schools, hygiene considerations extend to the fixtures and materials that form part of the room itself. Cable trunking is one of these surfaces, creating an opportunity to consider antimicrobial product protection alongside its primary electrical function.
The design challenge is to incorporate that additional feature while retaining the qualities expected of a cable management system including durability, practical installation, cable segregation and a consistent finish.
An antimicrobial additive also needs to work within the selected material and manufacturing process. Incorporating the technology into the PVCu allows treated-surface protection to become part of the product specification, alongside the trunking’s physical and functional requirements.
The Solution
Centaur uses Addmaster’s Biomaster antimicrobial technology in the compounded PVCu used to manufacture its antimicrobial trunking. This incorporates the additive within the material during production, making antimicrobial product protection an integral feature of the treated components.
Biomaster inhibits microbial growth on the treated surface by acting at multiple sites within susceptible microbial cells, disrupting essential functions involved in growth and reproduction. Incorporation into the material means the technology does not require a separate surface treatment to be repeatedly applied.
For Centaur, this brings cable management and antimicrobial material technology together in a single product range. Specifiers can select the antimicrobial trunking and corresponding treated accessories as part of their installation.
The Results
Centaur’s antimicrobial Meridian range gives specifiers an established cable management option with Biomaster incorporated into the PVCu.
The resulting product demonstrates how antimicrobial technology can be incorporated into everyday building components. Alongside its core role in organising and protecting cables, Centaur’s treated trunking provides an additional material feature that can be specified wherever antimicrobial product protection is required.
“Our customers need cable management systems that meet the practical demands of their buildings. Incorporating Biomaster into our antimicrobial trunking allows us to offer an additional feature within the PVCu itself, bringing together functional design and built-in protection of the treated surface.” Spencer Yate, Design & Marketing Manager, Centaur
“Centaur demonstrates how antimicrobial technology can be integrated into the everyday components of a building. By incorporating Biomaster into its PVCu trunking, Centaur gives specifiers an additional product protection feature with a clearly defined purpose of inhibiting microbial growth on the treated surface, complementing regular cleaning.” Paul Willocks, Global Marketing Director, Addmaster
