In adherence to the guidance provided by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), it is recognised that packaging for raw meat, poultry, and fish carries the potential to harbour harmful bacteria, posing a significant risk of food poisoning.

Biomaster antimicrobial technology inhibits the growth of bacteria to reduce the risk of spread and enhance the hygienic properties of your packaging materials.

Antimicrobial technology for packaging

Demand for antimicrobial packaging is growing and there are expectations that the global market will be worth over $10bn by 2021.

Reducing food waste and inhibiting the growth of bacteria on outer packaging are both main drivers for this growth and supermarkets and brand owners are being urged to do more to help customers make more hygienic choices.

Biomaster antimicrobial technology has already been proven to be a ready-made solution for reducing the risk of bacterial cross-contamination in food preparation and storage environments, as well as for packaging.

Antimicrobial packaging for raw meat and poultry packaging

Studies from the FSA have found that up to 7% of raw chicken packaging in UK supermarkets show traces of Campylobacter, the equivalent of around 9 million packets.

Biomaster inhibits the growth of bacteria such as Campylobacter, E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria as well as moulds and yeast on the outer packaging of fresh meat and poultry packaging, including films, lidded film packs and trays.

Incorporating Biomaster antimicrobial technology into the external packaging results in the growth of common food poisoning bacteria being impeded, reducing the risk of bacterial transmission from the outer packaging at the point of sale.

Antimicrobial dispensers for safer food preparation

Preparing food hygienically can be a crucial way of reducing your risk of catching an unpleasant food poisoning illness as bacteria can be transferred easily around the kitchen from chopping boards, utensils and even contaminated packaging.

Biomaster has been implemented into the outer layer of a range of cling film, baking foil and parchment paper dispensers to help reduce the risk of foodbourne pathogens being spread as you prepare food.

The application has become so successful that leading supermarket chain Asda now stocks the Biomaster protected dispensers for their own-brand product line.

Biomaster can be easily implemented into various paper and board materials during the production process, providing antimicrobial protection for the lifetime of the product.

Biomaster can be added at any stage of the manufacturing process and is available in masterbatch, liquid or powder formulations for plastics, textiles, paper and coatings as well as flexible film packaging and materials such as PET, PE and PP.

When bacteria come into contact with a Biomaster protected surface, the active antimicrobial agent prevents them from growing, producing energy or replicating, inhibiting any further growth.

The controlled release of the active ingredient provides powerful, effective antimicrobial protection for the lifetime of the product.
