The Dangers of Legionella
17 Nov 2010
Legionella is a gram negative, aerobic, pathogenic bacterium and is common in many environments with over 50 species and 70 serogroups being identified.
Legionellosis (Legionnaires Disease or Legion Fever) is a disease cause by the bacteria; this is the more severe form of Legionella infection and produces pneumonia. Pontiac fever is another complication caused by Legionella and produces a milder respiratory illness that resembles acute influenza.
Following up on recent Legionella outbreaks such as the one in Wales, Addmaster has run many parallel studies against Legionella using its Biomaster silver based antimicrobial additives.
Incorporated into a polymer substrate and tested to ISO standards, the treated plastic parts achieved a reduction of the bacteria by over 99% in a 24hr period.
Also testing to ISO standards, Biomaster works quickly against pathogenic bacteria and has achieved a reduction of over 82% in just 15 minutes and over 94% in just half an hour.
Once Biomaster is incorporated into a substrate it is active for the life of the product and fights the growth of bacterial continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Biomaster has been incorporated into many products where the Legionella bacteria has the ability to breed such as shower heads, water pipes, air conditioning units and potable water containers.
